Abstract:
Freeze-thaw damage is a major durability threat to concrete in cold regions. Moving beyond the conventional emphasis on the mortar matrix and interfacial transition zone (ITZ), this study investigates the influence mechanism of the pore structure of dolomite coarse aggregates on the frost resistance of concrete. Three types of aggregates with distinct pore characteristics (clay microcrystalline dolomite aggregate with a pore volume of 1.34%, microcrystalline dolomite aggregate with a pore volume of 9.75%, and Xenotopic dolomite aggregate with a pore volume of 1.48%) were examined using a multi-scale experimental framework integrating mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), nano-scratch testing, and three-dimensional X-ray computed tomography (X-CT), in conjunction with 400 rapid freeze-thaw cycles. The pore structure of the aggregate exerts coupled effects on degradation of the ITZ and evolution of the internal cracks, thus serving as a strong determinant of the freeze-thaw deterioration of concrete. After cycling, compared with the concrete made with 1.48% dense and low-porosity aggregates, concrete containing a high-porosity, capillary-dominated aggregate with 9.75% porosity exhibits pronounced deterioration, where the peak stress and elastic modulus are reduced by 22.0% and 32.9%, respectively, and the ITZ fracture toughness decreases by 42.2%, accompanied by accelerated development of interconnected crack networks. In contrast, concrete prepared with a dense, low-porosity aggregate with 1.48% porosity shows improved resistance, with only an 18.6% reduction in the peak stress. A damage-dependent, nonlinear constitutive mo-del was further developed and effectively reproduced the stress-strain response of freeze-thaw-damaged concrete. These findings provide mechanistic insight and practical support for designing frost-resistant concrete in regions where high-quality aggregates are limited and highlight the need for aggregate selection criteria that consider porosity as well as pore-structure descriptors.
